Atfaluna Successfully Supports Young Women with ‘Disabilities’ of Gaza.

Gaza City, Palestine, 12August 2018 – Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children ASDC concluded a multi-month project supported by the French Consulate-Jerusalem under title “Empowerment of Deaf Young Women through Skills Development and Social Inclusion”

The accomplished effort helped improve the livelihood opportunities and social inclusion of deaf young women in the Gaza Strip through innovative activities designed to match their individual skills with the market needs. The project activities included five vocational training (VT) courses for over sixty young women with disabilities in a variety of fields like patron design and sewing, embroidered Shoe-making, cooking and baking, sweet-making and hair dressing.

“This partnership with The French Consulate-Jerusalem helped us bring more positive changes to the lives of the persons with disabilities in the Gaza Strip. We are always ambitious to extend our efforts for such noble purposes”, said Naim Kabaja, ASDC Director.

The project activities also offered three life skills workshops for women with disabilities who took part in the training courses, in addition to two-month apprenticeship opportunities for fifty graduates of (VT) courses in private sector.

The effect has extended to reach the women’s family members through sixty individual and group counselling cases, debriefing sessions for the women involved in the (VT) and open recreational days gathered sixty young women with disabilities participating in the vocational training and their family members.

Such projects are currently highly important in order to reduce the acute devastating results from the prolonged Israeli blockade over the past decade to the Gaza Strip, whereas unemployment rate among youth has skipped 60%, whereas 80% of Gazans are aid-dependent according to UNRWA. Thus, ASDC implemented two sensitization workshops for local employers, representatives of private and public sectors, micro business organizations and vocational training centers to help develop the ladies’ potential.

ASDC is a registered Palestinian NGO located in Gaza City, has been working in the fields of hearing disability and community development since 1992.
